2 Tips On Deciding Whether To Make A Major Career Change

Pat Ellis

Lately, you may have grown tired of your current career. Or, you may have been offered an employment opportunity that is very different from your current occupation. If you are having trouble deciding on whether or not you should make such a major career change, start out by using the tips below.

1.  Consider Your True Motivations for Wanting to Change Careers

When first faced with the thought of changing careers, the first thing you may want to do is to stop and consider what your true motivations for either wanting a change or considering the offer. For this, you should have something on which to write.

Without putting much thought into it, think about what it is that you do not like about your current employment. Do you hate the long hours, even though it may pay well? Or, are you bored to tears at the thought of even going to work?

Next, write down what it is about your prospective career that attracts you to it. Are you excited about learning to do something new? Does this new job opportunity offer more money than the one you are working now?

Look over your lists to see if there are any common themes. Doing so may help you narrow down your true motivations for wanting something different. Then, consider whether or not it would be worth it while thinking about both options.

2.  Find Out as Much as You Can about Your Prospective Career

After you look inside of yourself to find your motivations, the next thing you should do is to seek out information about your prospective career. This not only includes reading and researching as much as you are able to about the job but also seeking out others who do that type of work.

While reading about a career can give you a broad understanding of what it entails, talking to people who are actually working it can give you unique insights. They can tell you what it is really like to work with the materials and people involved.

They can also let you know the good parts as well as any frustrating parts of the career. This helps to give you a realistic view of it before you make your decision.

Turning your thoughts inward as well as reaching out to others about the career you are considering can help you begin the decision-making process. You may also want to consider making an appointment with career coaching your area who can guide you personally as you seek new employment opportunities.
